During this season of Lent we have asked people from our church to reflect on the theme of what community means to them. For each person, that is going to take a different form, but for all of us, we value the gift of community that God has given to us. I have been encouraged by reading the reflections of our members and staff, and my hope is that during this season of Lent you will be inspired as well.

Proverbs 27:17
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Hebrews 10:23-25
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

This past weekend we completed our spring new members class at LJPC. It is always a wonderful time for me to get to meet the people that are saying they want to make LJPC their home. It is a time for the staff to talk about our vision and values and to communicate our desire for them to become an active part of our faith community.

I have to admit that because I tend to be more introverted, the idea of community is sometimes a little bit intimidating, and depending on the day, somewhat exhausting to think about. I often think that it would be easier to just go home and find a nice quiet corner, in the house, and do some reading, journaling and reflecting and not really engage with others.

Yet, I realize that I really do need others. I need my family, and I need the small groups that I am a part of, because they cause me to do reflecting that I would not do on my own. They ask questions and push me for answers, and encourage me when I feel disappointed or discouraged. They help keep me on task, reminding me of the calling to “add value” to our community and world.

I think about Jesus and I realize that even though He was God’s son, He did not try and do it all by himself. He called 12 disciples, around him, to be a part of His community and then of those 12, He allowed Peter, James and John to see some things that no one else got to see. This makes me realize that Jesus modeled community to us for a reason. Though He ministered to thousands, He knew the importance of a small group of people who could make the journey with Him.

May you find a community of believers who will join with you on this wonderful pilgrimage of following Jesus.

Prayer:
God thank you for the reminder that Jesus has given to us about being with others, who are seeking to learn more about You and follow You. Help us to make time for sharing in the blessing of community.
