“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds….let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Heb 10:24,25
As a single person, community at LJPC has been very important to me and I have developed a special fondness for the people here. The connection I have with other believers is something I make a priority, even more so since becoming a widow ten years ago. Having worked in the medical community, I know the physical consequences of isolation and loneliness, and want to guard against those things in my life. LJPC has been God’s way of caring for me and providing a healthy environment to move forward in life.
So what are the things that foster community for me?
Small groups, which come in many forms, have been a wonderful way to connect with people. There I’ve learned we are family, not just people who happen to meet at the same church on Sundays. God has repeatedly shown up in a Christian sister or brother, sent especially for me. When sharing my life with others, burdens become lighter, and the journey is much more rewarding. While studying God’s Word together either on Sundays or weekday groups, I learn from others who are more gifted in ways I am not, and appreciate their wisdom.
Secondly, having a servant’s heart fosters community for me. It has been a joy to come to know and serve alongside fellow Christ followers here. In addition to other service ministries, for 3 years I was an active deacon, and the relationships formed then as we served side by side continue to this day. God’s Spirit united our hearts as we had shared goals, like helping the less fortunate, praying with a friend in need, comforting and encouraging the sick, sharing meals, and even re-doing the brides room. Together we were part of something that was bigger than ourselves.
Christian community encourages me to want to live the life God has given me for His kingdom. As I see others use their gifts, I see the effect down the line from person to person, as acts of love and service are multiplied and community begets community. As Mother Teresa says, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” I think that our LJPC community creates many good ripples for God’s kingdom. I know it has for me.
Lord, thank you for the gift of our brothers and sisters in Christ, united by your Spirit. Help us to serve You as You deserve to be served in this world. In the process, grow us together in community that the world would see that we belong to You.
In Jesus name, Amen.
