The Why: SunHouse exists to introduce students into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus commanded us in scripture to “go into the world and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28) and La Jolla and the surrounding areas is where God has called us to make disciples. Introducing students to a relationship with Jesus Christ is usually a long process that involves both the church and parents working together and needs to strive to have students engaged with their own personal faith.
Our mission statement is also our process statement. We want students to learn to Love God, Serve People, and Change the World. This is taken from the three commandments of Jesus Christ. In the Bible in the book of Mark Chapter 12 verse 30, Jesus says the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:31 follows with “The second commandment is this: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” We simplified this with “Serve People.” And then in Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus commands us to “Go and make disciples of all nations….”. To us this means to “Change the World,” because the greatest joy in life, fulfilling what we were created for is to be a servant to Jesus Christ and tell others about this. As we do this, we are changing the world for God’s glory.
So we want students to walk through all those stages as they participate in SunHouse. Learn to Love God through Sunday mornings, bible studies, worship, trips and events and weekly program. Serve people through local soup kitchens, local mission projects, house building and even world missions. And to change the world by impacting those around them in school, family, and both their local neighborhood and the global community.
The What: SunHouse Middle School and High School has events, programs, trips and activities that are specifically for students to be brought into a relationship with other students and leaders. Yes they are really fun events, like paintballing, surfing, minigolf, tarp surfing, disneylanding, camping, broomballing, and a whole lot more. But they are designed for students to enter into the ministry we have here. Students like to have fun and we like to use fun and events as an excuse to get students to be able to hear something from God. So at almost every one of our events we make sure that God is proclaimed, scripture is read and relationships are formed. You probably noticed it said “almost” every event, and yes that is true. We do have some events that are specifically targeting out-reach students and want them to simply be introduced to our program, leaders and other students. Be sure to look at the Middle School Page and High School Page to get more information about events, trips, and programs. Also, if you want to look at our SunHouse website, it is at SunHouseOnline.com
